1) What is a Fuse Board?

The Fuse Board is the brains of the electrical system and is responsible for protecting electrical cables from overload, damage, and fire. The old style fuse board with actual fuses or fuse wire is now an obsolete piece of equipment and offers little protection to the users of the electrical system. Despite this, there are hundreds of these old fuse boards still in operation in Liverpool and surrounding areas.

A fuse board will protect against short circuits (where live and neutral become crossed) but offer little protection against electrical shocks.

2) What is a consumer unit?

A consumer unit is the more modern version of a fuse board (What’s the difference?)and contains trip switches that offer easier capabilities to reset a circuit rather than replacing a fuse or rewiring a fuse wire. These trip switches are only slightly more sensitive than fuses and still may not offer much protection against electric shocks. A modern consumer unit with residual current devices (RCD's) will offer the best protection available to ensure that you and your loved ones are protected from electrical shock.

3) What can go wrong with a Fuse Board, Fuse Box or Consumer Unit?

Electrical repairs may be necessary regardless of the type of fuse box that you have. The most common issue that we see with old fuse boxes is loose connections, corrosion internally and failing Main Switch. As these units are now 40+ years old it is to be expected that there will be a great deal of wear with use and age. Despite this, in many cases, we are able to offer assistance with electrical emergencies that occur but often these emergency repairs are only a temporary fix.

4) Electrical Safety and Old Fuse Boards

IF you still have an old fuse box then a fuse box replacement is strongly recommended to upgrade your current fuse box to the latest available standards. Be aware that your home insurance policy may be invalidated if you have not kept your electrical system in good working order, up to the latest standards or have had regular maintenance carried out. As a minimum an electrical safety check is strongly recommended to ascertain the condition of the electrical wiring, check the individual circuits and ensure that safety earthing is in place.

5) Burning Smell from old fuse box

In the Liverpool area, we have many old properties that STILL HAVE the old style rewireable fuse boxes installed. These do not comply with the latest safety standards and can be a potential danger in some cases. Old fuse box technology does not detect a large number of electrical faults such as faulty wiring, earth problems, broken circuits and more. It is not uncommon for these old fuse boxes to fail, seemingly without notice! They can overheat, and cause a burning smell to emanate from them. If this is not dealt with IMMEDIATELY there could be a risk of fire and serious repair bills.

6) The Modern Fuseboard

A modern fuseboard should consist of trip switches, RCD devices, Surge Protection, and individual circuit switches to allow maximum convenience and safety. When a modern fuseboard is installed, it will comply with current safety standards and contain circuit breakers or ideally RCBOs

The modern fuseboard should have RCD protection in some form to detect electrical shocks, earth faults, and offer some fire protection if possible.

7) Are Fusebox refurbishments possible?

The general lifespan of a Fusebox is around 20-30 years dependent upon the installed conditions. A fuse box installed in a damp basement will not last as long as a fuseboard that is installed in dry conditions with stable temperatures. The main components that fail first are the circuit breaker, RCD's and Main Switch. These components contain metal parts inside that can rust and corrode, damage which may not be noticeable from the outside. It is generally not possible to refurbish an old fuse box and is often more economically sensible to replace the unit for a new consumer unit.

8) Can individual electrical components be replaced?

If a circuit breaker or RCD device fails in your consumer unit then these parts can be replaced in most cases. These things are generally considered a small repair although parts may not always be easy to come by.

9) Trip switch problem in Liverpool?

When you have a trip switch that will not stay on it is normal to think that there is a faulty trip switch causing the issue. In fact, it is more common that there is an issue on one of the electrical circuits which requires electrical fault finding rather than trip switch replacement. Trip switches are designed to detect electrical problems and disconnect the electrical circuits that are affected. This can lead you to believe that the trip switch is faulty when in fact, it is performing its job as intended.

12) Consider an Electrical Inspection

If you are having electrical issues with your fuseboard, consumer unit, trip switches, wiring or anything else then it’s wise to consider an electrical inspection. As a minimum private domestic properties should have an electrical inspection / safety check carried out by certified electricians at least every ten years. This can help to detect issues that may be hidden, prevent minor problems from turning into a major problem unexpectedly and will compare the condition of your electrical system to modern safety standards.
