The most common electrical emergencies we attend across Liverpool homes.
Your whole house has lost power. Could be a tripped main switch, a faulty RCD, or a supply issue. We diagnose and fix the cause quickly.
⏱ 15–60 minutesA circuit breaker or RCD that keeps tripping is one of the most common emergencies we attend. The cause is usually a fault on a circuit, not the switch itself.
⏱ 30–60 minutesA burning or fishy smell is a sign of overheating wiring or components. Turn off your main switch immediately and call us.
⏱ 45–90 minutesSome rooms working and others not? This usually indicates a problem with a specific circuit or a tripped individual breaker.
⏱ 10–45 minutesDamaged, old, or faulty consumer units are a significant safety risk. We carry spare consumer units on board and can replace yours the same day.
⏱ 60–180 minutesSparks from sockets, buzzing from the consumer unit, or persistent flickering lights all indicate a fault needing immediate professional attention.
⏱ 30–60 minutesFive recent jobs across Liverpool — what the customer rang about, what we found, what it cost, and how long it took. Tap any job to read the full story.
The customer smelled burning near the meter cupboard just as they were heading to bed. They had also noticed the lights flickering when they boiled the kettle, and put it down to a one-off.
The customer rang on a Tuesday evening about a burning smell coming from their fuse box. They had spent a while walking round the house first to be sure it really was coming from the meter cupboard. Once they were certain it was electrical, they got in touch straight away. Whatever time it is, day or night, I pick up the phone and attend.
We arrived at around 2am to that unmistakeable smell of electrical burning — a smell you get to know very well over a career in fault finding. The fuse box was a plastic one, fairly modern in style but around 25 years old.
The main switch had discoloured terminals where the incoming supply connects. Once we got a torch in there, it was clear it had been burning. The switch had to come out immediately, and when we removed it we found the side of it badly burnt — which had also damaged the circuit breaker sitting next to it.
When there is a burning smell coming from a fuse box, the diagnosis is nearly always visual — the evidence is there to see. That, combined with the flickering lights the customer described, pointed straight at the main switch.
Loose connections on the incoming side of the main switch. That is not necessarily down to whoever installed the fuse box — connections can work loose over many years of heating and cooling.
We replaced the main switch and the damaged circuit breaker, both of which we had on the van. Every connection was tightened to the manufacturer's specification and then double checked.
Loose connections happen in any electrical system over time. If your electrics have not been properly inspected by a professional in the last ten years, I strongly recommend having it done. Loose wires cause fires. On this property we also recommended replacing the fuse box — once switchgear reaches 25 to 30 years old it has usually served its useful life, and components had already started failing.
A distressed customer on a Sunday evening with only the lights working — the RCD had tripped and would not stay on, leaving them with no sockets anywhere in the house.
An emergency call on a Sunday evening from a customer in Woolton. They were upset because their RCD — the trip switch that protects you from an electric shock — kept switching itself off and would not go back on.
An old plastic fuse box with a single RCD covering everything. The device would not stop tripping and would not reset, so the customer had lights and nothing else.
After many years teaching, testing and fault finding, I was able to narrow this one down within minutes. The fuse box is always where diagnosis begins, and in this case the trail led to the shower circuit.
The shower pull cord switch. The wiring inside it had worked loose over time and was causing a short circuit.
Repairing this means stripping the wiring back until you reach good clean copper. When wiring gets too hot the copper tarnishes, and that has to be cut away for the connection to be sound again. Luckily there was some spare cable length in the roof space, so we could re-terminate the wiring properly without the extra cost of extending it in the loft. We had the parts on board, so no return visit and no second labour charge.
The most common reason shower pull cords burn out is being switched on and off constantly. They are not really switches at all — they are an isolator, there so the shower can be worked on safely without turning the power off at the fuse box. If you are using yours more than a few times a year, you are overusing it. Leave it on, please, or we will be seeing you soon.
A 1930s semi with the whole house dead. The customer had spent hours trying every switch he could find before ringing round looking for an emergency electrician.
Around 8:30pm I took a call from a customer with a 1930s semi in Childwall. He was in quite a fluster — he had been having problems with his power for a few hours and had tried everything he could think of. That is when the minefield begins, trawling the internet trying to work out who to ring. Thankfully, he found me.
I always try to help customers over the phone before agreeing to come out. It saves them time and money, and it builds trust. It is simply the right way to do business. On this occasion none of my advice worked, so as soon as I had finished another emergency over in Woolton I headed straight there.
An old plastic fuse box of the single-RCD type — the kind that is no longer fitted, because one fault takes out the whole house. The RCD itself had burnt out and was not passing power to any circuit.
I was able to diagnose it very quickly and carry out the repair there and then, thanks to the stock of spares I carry on the van. Everything was done inside the first hour, and the only cost on top of the callout was the replacement part itself. The customer was very pleased.
A new fuse box. The reason a single fault took out this entire house is that everything ran through one protective device. A modern unit splits the house across several, so a fault in one place does not leave you sitting in the dark.
Every socket in the house was out and the trip switch would not stay on. The customer had already unplugged everything they owned, and it made no difference.
The sockets were tripping and the switch at the fuse box would not go back on. The customer had unplugged all their appliances and equipment, which had not helped, so they called an emergency electrician.
An old-style trip switch box with no shock protection fitted at all. The socket switch blew again every time the customer tried it. One socket had been taped over — but that turned out to be a red herring, taped up simply to stop anyone using a side that had stopped working.
We started at the fuse box, as always, and used our test equipment to confirm there was a genuine fault on the sockets circuit rather than an appliance problem. Because of the age of the wiring, every socket in the house ran off a single circuit — which meant tracing it took longer than usual.
The customer had new sockets fitted a few months earlier. Following the fault along the circuit led us to one of them, which had been put back badly and trapped a wire behind it. The wire had been crushed against the metal back box as the socket was screwed home, and that was the fault.
The wire was damaged, but we were able to join a fresh piece onto it and put the problem right quickly.
This work had not been done by a registered electrician, so nothing was tested afterwards, no warranty was given and there was no guarantee it was safe. When you are getting quotes for electrical work, do not be tempted by a handyman or an unregistered electrician. A professional tests their work, wires to the BS7671 regulations, and stands behind it. We also recommended a new fuse box here, and splitting those sockets across two circuits so a single fault can never take the whole house out again.
An early-1900s terrace with no power at all — and, unusually, not a single switch in the fuse box had tripped, which points the diagnosis somewhere quite different.
A customer in Wavertree rang on a Monday night. No power anywhere in the property, and nothing had tripped.
An older fuse box, the type fitted under the wiring regulations of the day, with one shock-protection device covering the power circuits but not the lighting.
When a whole property loses power, the cause can sit anywhere along the chain between the power station and your fuse box. We work through it in order:
The main switch inside the fuse box had failed, taking the whole house with it. We are starting to see these fail more often now — most of them are around thirty years old, and switchgear does not last forever.
Because we carry and stock a wide range of parts on the van, we fixed it there and then. No return visit, no further labour charge, and no waiting around for parts.
Fuse boxes and the switchgear inside them do not last forever. "We have never had a problem before" does not mean your electrics can be left alone indefinitely. You would not run a car to 100,000 miles without changing the oil and expect the engine to be fine. We recommended a modern fuse box here, which would also add shock protection to the lighting and give every circuit its own — so a single fault causes far less disruption.
Every job above is a real callout attended by Paul, with photographs taken on site. Prices shown are the total the customer paid including parts — our emergency callout charge covers the first hour, with any parts or additional work quoted before we proceed.

Yes. Faulty wiring is a leading cause of house fires in the UK. Warning signs include frequently tripping switches, flickering lights, burning smells, warm or discoloured sockets, and sparks when plugging in. Liverpool has many older properties with aging wiring. If you notice any of these signs, do not ignore them.
Our out of hours rate (evenings after 17:00, weekends and bank holidays) is £180 for the first hour. Weekday daytime emergencies are £120 for the first hour. Both include circuit testing and visual inspection. No hidden fees — we always quote before starting additional work.
We want to help you understand your electrical problem — even before we arrive.
Clear access to your consumer unit or fuse box is essential — so please take all the coats, shoes, and Christmas decorations out of that cupboard!
If there is a problem with your sockets, we will likely need access to every socket in your home. If you can make good, clear access then we will work much quicker. If you cannot clear every socket, do not worry — we may be able to work around that.
If you smell burning, please turn off the main switch (if safe to do so) and keep everyone away from the area until we arrive.
In general, no. There is nothing that cannot be fixed or repaired in some way. No matter what has happened, there is a way to repair or replace the affected components.
The most important thing: do not worry. We carry a range of spare parts including circuit breakers, RCDs, cable, connectors, and even complete consumer units — meaning we can repair or replace almost any situation on the first visit.
Where an installation is too damaged to leave connected, we may have to disconnect it to make it safe. These circumstances are rare but do occasionally happen.
If the consumer unit is badly damaged, we have several options: replace it straight away, install a temporary consumer unit, or safely isolate just the affected circuits.
If you need to involve your home insurance, we can install temporary power supplies for essential appliances while the process takes place.
We are specialist fault finding electricians. Here is how we track down electrical problems.
Check consumer unit, sockets, switches and fittings for obvious damage, burn marks, or wear.
Turn off all circuits and test one by one to identify exactly which circuit is causing the problem.
Using professional equipment, we check voltage, continuity, and insulation resistance to pinpoint the fault.
We explain in plain English, provide a written quote, and fix it — often on the same visit.
Transparent pricing. No hidden fees. Written quote before any further work.
Same day emergency. Normally 2 hours or less. Our electrician will text when on the way with Google Maps tracking.
