Back to top2) What is the difference between a Fuse Box and a Consumer Unit?
There are a few differences between a Fuse Box and a Consumer Unit which is explained in more depth in our article. Basically, a fuse box will contain either Fuses or Fuse wires. This type of technology was fine when it was installed but is now rather outdated and even potentially dangerous in some circumstances. A Fuse Box should be replaced for a modern consumer unit that complies with the latest edition of the Electrical Wiring Regulations. Replacing old units with modern technology will ensure that you have the best protection available and will ensure that your electrical installation can efficiently deal with any electrical problems that may arise.
Back to top3) Is an Old Fuse Box Illegal?
No, old fuse boxes are not illegal. We discuss this in more depth in our article. There will be no knock at your door to tell you off, you will not get into trouble for having an old fuse box and no-one will make you have a new consumer unit installed in most cases. There are some things to bear in mind though...
- Your home Insurance may be invalidated if your electrical installation is not up to date
- Old Fuse Boxes are a potential hazard and can result in an electrical emergency call out when things go wrong
- Each electrical connection inside an old fuse box is now at least 45 years old (have an inspection carried out)
- You are likely missing absolutely vital electric shock protection
- Parts are now obsolete so repairs are often not possible
- New electrical circuits or home renovations will often require a new consumer unit to be fitted
Your fuse box is ancient history at this point in time and should any problems arise with the fuse box, you will likely need the whole unit replaced at short notice which will cost more than having it replaced at your convenience.

4) What is inside a consumer unit and what to the parts do?
Your old fuse board is missing several important components and we discuss these in detail in our "What's inside a Consumer Unit" article. Old fuse boxes will not detect many electrical issues and there could be hidden dangers lurking in your wiring system that present danger but no symptoms. An old fuse box will not detect these issues like a modern consumer unit and as such, it’s a good idea to have a thorough electrical inspection carried out if this has not been done in the last 10 years.

5) How Much does a New Consumer Unit Cost?
In 2025, a replacement consumer unit costs from £650 for up to 7 Circuits. An inspection prior to replacement is strongly recommend which costs around £200. Assuming no issues are discovered upon inspection, the fuse box replacement can go ahead. If the inspection throws up serious issues, then either remedial works will be required or replacing the fuse box may not be possible. Remedial works can range from minimal costs up to the cost of a full rewire so it can be difficult to estimate these costs in an article on the internet that relates to no single electrical installation.
