2) Common Electrical Emergencies in Homes and Businesses

There are many electrical issues that can affect the working capabilities of electrical installations. Typical situations that could be deemed electrical emergencies are:

  • Burning Smells
  • No Sockets Working but lights are
  • Tripping Switches
  • Intermittent Power Outages
  • Lights have failed
  • Socket Crackling

In many cases where electrical systems have begun to fail there could be serious danger present leading to electrical shocks, fires, or serious damage to the electrical system. An electrical emergency situation does not necessarily have to be a dangerous situation but could be causing serious inconvenience.

If for example your plug sockets circuit has tripped but there is no burning smell and no apparent danger, then it is a very large inconvenience that will eventually cause the fridge and freezer to defrost but not necessarily cause any harm. Resetting the trip switch continually on the other hand, can be quite dangerous as there is an electrical faults present in the wiring system that is not being investigated and rectified.

3) The Importance of Quick Response in Electrical Emergencies

When electrical emergencies occur, it’s vital that an emergency electrician is called as soon as possible before any further damage is sustained to the wiring or electrical system. Resetting a trip switch or breaker will cause extra damage to wiring if the electrical fault is not determined and fixed first. As a professional electrician and electrical lecturer, I strongly recommend that fault finding and investigation works are carried out as soon as possible using specialised and calibrated test equipment to determine the cause.

Ignoring electrical problems ultimately creates more damage, costs more money to put right and adds extra stress and inconvenience to an already tense situation.

4) 24/7 Emergency Electrical Services in Gateacre

As your local EMERGENCY ELECTRICIAN IN GATEACRE whatever your urgent electrical needs are I will always try to help. There are times when I cannot attend every emergency call and in these cases I can try to assist with a video call in some circumstances. Where there is a consumer unit issue, it is sometimes possible to isolate faulty electrical circuits until emergency repairs can be carried out.

If you are a domestic customer, I appreciate that you will be very concerned for your safety and the potential damage to your electrical system. Try not to worry, I carry out my best work at 2am in the dark when no power is working to your home.
I specialise in emergency calls and offer competitive prices for my services. I will attend electrical emergencies 24 hours a day with typically quicker response times after 5pm weekdays and on weekends.

5) Dealing with Power Outages and what an Emergency Electrician Can Do

There are a number of reasons why a power outage might occur. One common reason is the failure of the MAIN LINKED SWITCH installed in the consumer unit or the meter cables. All the electrical current flows through this switch for your whole electrical system and as such, they are often prone to failure.

Main Switch Fault - Electrical Faults Fixed in Gateacre

Where a main switch fails, you may notice issues for some time beforehand such as dimming or flickering lights, a strange fishy burning smell, intermittent operation of some electrical equipment and possibly some devices tripping in the consumer unit. Fortunately, I carry a range of spare Main Switches just in case one happens to fail and can quickly diagnose issues with a Main Switch Failure.

6) Faulty Sockets and Electrical Outlets

Where various sockets appear to be faulty or are causing frequent circuit breaker trips, there is no guarantee that the issue will show up on our electrical test equipment. As such, we tend to rely on our eyes and noses to detect where an issue may lie. Discolouration around a plug socket, strange smells, and visible cracking can indicate that electrical faults lie beneath the surface.

Cracked Switch - Electrical Faults Fixed in Gateacre

Extreme heat can cause PVC sockets and switches to turn yellow, discolour and crack. When this happens there is a risk of an electrical fire occurring. If you ever spot any of these issues around your plug sockets then it’s best to ask an electrician to take a look. This does not have to cost if you can send photographs over the internet of the problem. Some of my services are free and I am happy to assist where electrical safety may be at risk.

7) Electrical Fault Finding. How do we find Issues?

Not all companies offer emergency electrician services. Many are involved in rewiring homes, installing electrical systems into new build housing and others may want to focus on car charging equipment. We specialise in smaller jobs, electrical fault finding and emergency electrician call outs to urgent problems. As such we carry out quite a bit of fault finding and repairs.

There are a number of ways that electricians can detect wiring faults but in short, we use specialised test equipment to locate the problems and track down the affected part of the circuit. We are true local emergency electricians in Gateacre and can pin down faulty wiring problems quickly to fix your power cut.

8) Burnt Smell or Scorch Marks are Signs You Need an Emergency Electrician

Where there is evidence of burning, blackening of electrical switches, sockets, or fuse box (electrical panel, consumer unit) then there are serious electrical problems that need addressing quickly. When electrical equipment overheats or is in distress the burn marks are a tell-tale sign. Burning often occurs on higher powered circuits such as electrical showers, electric cookers, electric vehicle chargers and plug sockets.

These higher powered circuits often amplify electrical issues like loose connections, corroded sockets, aging equipment and fuse box problems.

As Liverpool emergency electricians, we are used to dealing with these types of electrical emergencies and when you have urgent problems like this, you need the best electricians for the job.

9) Circuit Breakers and Fuse Box Issues: When to Call for Help

Domestic electrical installations are rarely maintained to the highest standards and as such, things often go wrong. Where there appear to be circuit breaker or fuse box issues such as tripping switches it is more likely that there is an electrical fault in the wiring than a broken trip switch.

Circuit breakers, Residual Current Devices (RCDs) and other switches in the fuse box trip to prevent electrical faults from causing fires and electrical shock. It is a common misconception that these switches themselves are faulty.

If you have switches that are tripping the first step in fault finding is to unplug all the electrical devices in your home. Literally unplug the plugs from the wall, do not simply turn them off. If you are still having problems even with everything unplugged then it’s best to call a 24-hour emergency electrician to investigate the problem. We are your local Emergency Electrician in Gateacre and we are here to help.

If you need immediate attendance then call me on 07858 136 955 or 0151 351 4011 and I will attend to fix the problem.

10) How to prevent short circuits and overloading

There are a few different electrical faults that can occur and one of the most dangerous is the short circuit. Where there is a short circuit, large electrical fault currents are flowing and can cause wiring to catch fire, switches to trip with a bang and can result in permanent damage to electrical systems. Short circuits are different from earth faults (ground faults) and this article explains more.

Overloading is caused by the use of too much electrical equipment on a particular circuit or extension lead at any one time. Using several high-powered appliances in the kitchen will often cause electrical overload and you will find a fuse that blows or a circuit breaker that trips as a result. Light fixtures are unlikely to cause overloading with modern day LED lighting as very little power is used in these fixtures.

The most likely culprits for overloading a circuit are appliances that contain heating elements like washing machines, tumble dryers, toasters, and kettles. If you have overloaded an electrical circuit then simply stop using so many appliances at one time and see if that helps. In some cases, the circuit may need to be redesigned by an electrician in order to prevent future overloading.

Prolonged electrical overloading can shorten the life of the electrical wiring, cause permanent cable damage and in some cases may even cause a fire.

11) Electrical Shocks: Immediate Steps and When to Call an Electrician

Electrical shocks are a serious threat to humans and animals. Despite UK electrical systems having some of the highest standards in the world, there are occasions when electrical shocks can still occur. Shocks from sinks and taps are common and can be caused by poor earthing, missing earths from local circuits or electrical current flowing through the earth due to problems in the electrical system or street.

Shocks from sockets or light switches are also a regular occurrence and often point to electrical faults elsewhere in the wiring system. Specialist test equipment is often needed to trace such faults along with the knowledge that experienced and skilled electricians possess.

As urgent Liverpool electricians, we come across many different kinds of electrical faults and regularly test for missing earthing and poor connections.

There are not many safe ways to deal with electrical shock problems yourself so please do not take dangerous risks.

12) Storm and Water Damage. Protecting Your Electrical System!

Even the highest quality electrical work carried out by qualified electricians can occasionally fail after many years. The most common areas that electrics will fail is outside the property. Water ingress can affect many different electrical components outdoors including outdoor lighting, outdoor sockets and commonly water ingress into security floodlights.

The best way to maintain outdoor electrics is to visually inspect things yourself every 6 months to ensure that junction boxes are in good condition, electrical accessories are not corroding and that any cables are not suffering damage. Any inspections should be visual only and with the electrical supply turned off!

13) When DIY Electrical Fixes Can Be Dangerous

Is it ever acceptable to carry out DIY electrical work? In some cases, YES. There are things that can be carried out on a Do It Yourself basis such as wiring a plug, carrying out self-checks on appliances and inspecting equipment such as extension leads. If you are planning on carrying out safety checks on appliances and equipment then ALWAYS turn the power off and disconnect equipment before doing so.

Electrical Damage - Electrical Faults Fixed in Gateacre

Where cables have become damaged, an electrician should always be called to carry out repairs. DIY electrical repairs can be dangerous and wiring should never be fixed with electrical tape. Insulation tape is not a great source of electrical insulation in general and repairs are often not considered safe or permanent by using tape alone.

14) Urgent Repairs for Tripping RCDs (Residual Current Devices)

A residual current device is a clever little trip switch, often found in a consumer unit. These devices are intended to protect us from electrical shocks and serious injury. They play a crucial role in the overall safety of our electrical systems and without them, there would be minimal other protection from electrical earth faults. The RCD devices have a test button on them and it could save lives as long as they are checked regularly.

15) Electrical Safety Inspections After an Emergency

There is no more important time to have a Periodic Electrical Inspection carried out than after electrical issues or an electrical emergency. Many homes in Gateacre are now quite old and the wiring systems installed in them will also be aging with the property. Older wiring systems are more likely to break down than new wiring systems as cable insulation breaks down over time. A Periodic Electrical Inspection is known as many names including EICR, Electrical Safety Check, Landlord Electrical Check and more.

The process involves several hours of electrical inspection, testing and visual inspections to determine the condition of the electrical system. Once the inspection is complete, a report is produced on the condition of the electrical system. The report will detail and immediate dangers, potential dangers, or recommendations for improvement.

When an electrical emergency has taken place, it is often a warning from electrical systems that repairs are needed, wiring is becoming old or things are starting to go wrong with the wiring which should be checked ASAP.
