2) What is an Electrical Emergency?

There are many kinds of electrical emergencies that could occur requiring electrical repairs and safety measure to be taken. An electrical emergency can be subjective depending upon the needs of the client but generally speaking they include:

  • Power Outages
  • Switches Tripping
  • Hot Fuse Box
  • Electrical Shocks
  • Electrical Burning Smells
  • Flickering Lights
  • Sockets not working but nothing tripped

Each of these types of electrical emergencies can be caused by any number of electrical issues making it difficult for an average homeowner to narrow down the cause of the problem. Emergency electricians have a variety of electrical test equipment to enable them to trace and locate the causes of electrical faults. Once a fault is traced to a certain area or direct point, the cost of any repairs can be established. In many cases, repairs can be carried out immediately at minimal additional cost.

3) Short Circuits

Many electrical problems are often thought to be short circuits when in fact, a short circuit is rarely the cause. An earth fault is often the most likely culprit of a tripping switch or small shocks from equipment. If you have a short circuit occurring then it’s likely that the circuit breaker will be the switch that trips first in the consumer unit or fuse box. The RCD / RCB devices will be the most likely devices to trip when there is an earth fault.
A short circuit is best described as an unwanted connection of little to no resistance between Line (Live) and Neutral conductors in a circuit. The diagram describes this:

A short circuit can occur when a nail or screw is driven through a cable connecting Line and Neutral together through the conductive metal of the nail or screw. Appliances can also short out if components within then fail so it’s a good idea to disconnect all appliances if you have switches tripping.

5) Electric Shocks

When you are receiving electric shocks from equipment, taps or sinks there are likely to be serious problems with the safety earthing connections in your property. There could also be an issue with the incoming supply cable from the street. Electric shocks are a very dangerous situation and a genuine emergency that requires immediate attendance from a specialist fault finding electrician. For yours and your family's safety, it is strongly advisable to call immediately for advice. It is often best to avoid contact with all metal parts of the property such as metal sockets, switches, taps, sinks, fuse box or consumer unit and ask us to attend.

6) Electrical Fire

It takes a great deal of time for electrical systems to degrade to the point where an electrical fire will start. When this happens, it is because there have been high temperatures that have eventually caused things to catch fire. The addition of home furnishings, thermal insulation, home construction materials and other materials surrounding electrical accessories and cabling can add to the fire hazards.

7) Power Outages

When power outages occur, it is more often than not as a result of localised power cuts that create either intermittent or prolonged electricity supply issues to homes and businesses. Where you have no sockets, no lights, and no electricity AT ALL, then it may be a localised power cut that has occurred. Check with your local Distribution Network Operator by calling 105. They should be able to tell you if there are maintenance services or emergency works occurring in your area that may be affecting your electrical supply.

If it transpires that there are no works locally then it is likely to be a fault with your own electrical system. Call us to attend your electrical emergency as soon as possible on 07858 136 955.

8) Electrical Outlets or Plug Socket Problems

One of the most common electrical issues that we receive calls about is the issue of plug sockets functioning incorrectly, buzzing, crackling or complete plug socket failure. Where there are crackling noises from a plug socket it is important to shut off the electrical supply at the electrical panel or consumer unit as soon as possible. Crackling noises are a sign of electrical current that is struggling to flow around a circuit and the heat generated by this struggle can lead to fires.

If you discover that you have a loose plug socket on the wall then this needs to be rectified immediately as live parts could be accessible to the touch or exposed if further damage occurs.

9) What steps should I take to ensure a safe electrical installation?

One of the best safety measures that you can take to ensure that your electrical system is working optimally is to have a professional electrician carry out a periodic electrical inspection which produces an electrical installation condition report. The process can take a few hours for a small domestic property up to a few days for large commercial premises. Electrical Inspections aim to provide an overview of the safety of the electrical installation and enable you to make an informed decision regarding any repairs that may be necessary.

A regularly maintained system achieves peace of mind, electrical safety and proof to insurers and prospective buyers that the electrical system has been well maintained.

Once any electrical emergencies have been dealt with its important to consider an electrical inspection to ascertain if there are any further issues that may be lurking in the system.

10) How often should a private domestic property be inspected?

in 2024, a private domestic property is recommended for electrical checks every ten years as a minimum. Where there are issues that are uncovered, the inspector may recommend that the electrical system is inspected more frequently to keep a closer eye on issues such as cable deterioration and fuse box condition.
