When terrible smells come from your electrical system, the news is never going to be good. A fishy smell from the consumer unit can indicate a whole host of issues that could be dangerous, expensive and inconvenient. If you notice bad smells from your fuse box then you need to turn the power off and call an emergency electrician right away.
Back to top1) What is the consumer unit / fuse box / electrical panel?
The consumer unit in your home is the box that contains all the electrical trip switches and controls the flow of electricity around your home. The box contains a number of electrical components like the circuit breaker, the RCD (electric shock prevention), a main switch and in older boxes even fuse wire.
This box is responsible for dividing the mains electrical supply into smaller usable electrical circuits and sending power to each light switch, electrical plug socket and light fitting around your home.
Back to top2) What causes a smelly fuse box?
One of the most common causes for this strange smell from the fuse box is overheating due to loose connections, electrical problems with components in the fuse box and loose wiring. The fishy smell comes from overheated plastic and melting wiring. The electrical fire smell is unmistakeable and gives off toxic fumes that are hazardous to your health. Without immediate attention, it is highly likely that the high temperatures and potential fire hazards could lead to a serious fire.

3) What are the warning signs of a failing fuse box?
Flickering lights, crackling sounds, intermittent power cuts, a burning electrical smell and tripping switches can all indicate that your fuse box or consumer unit may be failing. An experienced electrician will be able to determine where there is danger and what can be done to rectify any serious situations.
Warning Signs to look for:
- Excessive Heat - This means that there may be problems like an overloaded circuit, failing trip switches, main switch failure
- Fishy Odour - Indicative of overheating, melting plastics, imminent danger to those using the electrical system
- Discolouration of Covers - Where a fuse box cover or surrounding areas are brown, black or otherwise starting to change colour, this can indicate there are serious electrical issues
- Intermittent Power Disruptions - If you are experiencing power interruptions and especially combined with a burning odor, then it is likely you have fuse box or consumer unit issues.
- Old or worn-out wiring - If your wiring looks very old throughout your property then its a good idea to have it checked out by a professional electrician as soon as possible before the fish smell starts to occur.
4) Home Appliances and Circuit Overload
Where a large number of power hungry appliances are used on a single electrical circuit you may notice the electrical burn smell occurring from socket outlets or from the fuse box. Electrical circuits are designed by expert electricians to handle a number of electrical appliances. Where wiring has been extended, is particularly old or is damaged, it may no longer meet the original design intentions and could be overloading.
A trip switch will not always operate with gradual overload like this and instead, may simply become very hot leading to a possibly electrical fire risk.
Back to top5) Overloading the Fuse Box
With the heavy reliance on electrical equipment that we have in 2026, it is becoming more common to see overloading at the fuse board / breaker box. We now have electric showers (heavy load), hot tubs (heavy load), car charging equipment (heavy load), electric heating (heavy load), large powerful appliances and more. These electrical loads can sometimes cause electrical overload especially in older homes where the wiring and fuse box may not have been updated in some time.
The best way to ensure safety before installing additional electrical loads into our homes is to have an electrical inspection carried out.
Back to top7) What are Electrical Inspections?
An electrical safety check / landlord electrical check / EICR or Electrical Inspection is actually known as a "Periodic Electrical Inspection". The result of this inspection process produces a document known as the EICR or Electrical Installation Condition Report.
Electrical inspections are vital to prevent electrical hazards from turning serious, to alert you to hidden dangers and to monitor the condition of the electrical system over time. Heavy loads, excessive use, faulty wiring and old electrical connections can all contribute to a fishy smelling fuse box as plastic insulation overheats and melts. An electrical inspection will place an estimated date on the electrical installation along with checking various things like circuit resistance values to ascertain if there are loose connections, old wiring that should be replaced or serious problems leading to dangers.
Back to top8) Tumble Dryers and Fishy Burning Smells
The tumble dryer is a powerful appliance that demands a lot of electrical current. This type of appliance can also be run for a long period especially during the winter months as several loads of washing are dried. When we combine these factors with other potential hazards such as aging electrical sockets, old electrical wiring or hidden electrical faults in the system you can find that issues occur quickly.
Back to top9) How to protect Electrical Installations from Damage?
In order to avoid overheating fuse boxes, fishy burning smells, wiring damage and expensive repairs its best to have your electrical installations checked every ten years by a qualified electrician. Not only for your peace of mind but to ensure that your home insurance does not become invalidated due to lack of maintenance on your electrical system. A faulty breaker, dangerous fuse box or electrical fault hidden in a circuit somewhere will not always be immediately obvious to the untrained eye. Even an electrician may need to get specialist test equipment on the wiring to actually 'see' what is happening behind the scenes.
