2) What happened on this job?

We received a call to say that the boiler had gone off and the switch had tripped at the fuse box. Once I arrived at the property, I discovered that there was an issue with the wiring inside the junction box above the boiler. There were a number of cables that were tangled and one wire had pinched against another causing a short circuit. 

This issue caused the consumer unit / fuse box to trip off. 

3) What causes a fuse box to trip off?

There is an almost endless list of electrical issues that can cause a fuse box to trip off. When it comes to a boiler tripping the electric, there can be a number of reasons:

• Faulty pump inside the boiler or on the heating system
• Water ingress onto the PCB (printed circuit board) of the boiler
• Faulty fan unit inside the boiler
• Damaged Immersion heater element
• Faulty trip switch in the consumer unit / fuse box
• Damage to electrical wiring somewhere on the boiler or heating circuit

When we are talking about electric tripping off in general, there can be a greater number of causes such as: 

• Rodents chewing cables
• Pinched wires (under floorboards in the loft for example)
• Faulty sockets, switches or light fittings
• Appliances that are failing
• Water ingress into wiring
• Failing cable insulation (often due to age or poor installation)

4) Who do I call when the power goes off?

If ALL YOUR POWER IS OFF, and by this, I mean, lights, sockets, appliances, EVERYTHING, then it is likely you have a local power cut and NOT and issue with your wiring in your home. If you have checked and there is NO POWER TO ANYTHING then ring 105 (freephone) to be put through to the local Electricity Network who will be able to tell you if there are any known issues in your area.

5) Smelly Fusebox with Smoke

One of the most common issues we experience on emergency jobs is the funny smelling Fusebox. When this happens, there is usually a rather serious issue. The funny plastic, fishy smell is the smell given off when plastics and PVC are on fire. Your Fusebox switches are made from plastic and your cables are made from PVC and copper. The pungent unmistakeable smell is an immediate warning that your power needs to be shut off immediately!!
