2) Emergency Electrician in Liverpool May 2026

Being one of the most well-respected Emergency Electricians in Liverpool, we tend to receive a lot of phone calls for, well, emergencies!

Many Liverpool terraced homes throughout Wavertree, Bootle, Aigburth, Toxteth and other local historic areas contain very old wiring systems. It is, unfortunately, these types of wiring systems that seem to fail most often. One of the major reasons for electrical system failure is down to lack of professional maintenance combined with a fuse box that could not detect any electrical fault unless it is the most serious immediate type of fault.

3) Fuse Wire Boxes

If your home has an old fuse wire fuse box such as the one pictured here then you are at the same risk of electrical failure due to aging wiring and poor maintenance. It is a sad fact that electrical systems are largely ignored by homeowners until some serious failure occurs. The financial implications of ignoring your wiring can be extensive.

Fuse wire boxes were never designed to last forever and in conjunction with the age of the wiring they are protecting we seem to find that many older Liverpool homes now require extensive repairs or rewiring.

The fuse wire box protects from overload and large electrical fault currents and that is about it. There is no additional protection from electrical shock other than the aging earthing system, no early warning of cable insulation degradation and no surge protection for your homes wiring or appliances.

4) Why won’t electrical cables last forever?

Electrical wiring is surprisingly resilient and can last for many decades without replacement or repair. Nevertheless, no one can tell you the life expectancy of your current wiring even WITH a thorough investigation, testing and inspection as there are too many variables to consider. One thing is for sure though, electrical wiring that is now 50+ years old is certainly on borrowed time and before you go spending tens of thousands on a new kitchen, bathroom, plastering, Farrow and Ball paints and Laura Ashley wall paper (or whatever designer decoration you think is the nicest and a “must have”) spare a little thought for you poor old electrical cabling AND your safety!!!

Whenever we see a fuse box this old, we let out a sigh as we know there are likely to be several faults in the system and NOT just the one the customer thinks is blowing fuses. Don’t get me wrong, we have many old spares to patch up these ancient fuse boxes, lots of special techniques to patch up your electrical system and get you going again but once wiring is this old you will see repeated issues ongoing.

As your local Emergency Electrician in Liverpool, we have seen it all.

6) Common Emergency Problems in Liverpool Electrical Installations

If I had to make a list of the most common causes of electrical failure in domestic properties, I suspect the list would be something along the lines of this:

  • Poor DIY
  • Aging Wiring
  • Water Damage
  • Rodent Damage
  • Brittle Cable Insulation
  • Burnt Stuff

If it helps, I will elaborate on each of these below.

7) Poor DIY

Yes, I know they sell cable, sockets, switches and fuse boxes in B&Q but that doesn’t mean it’s fine to have a go at whatever you fancy when it comes to electrical systems. Electricians spend years training, learning on the job and MOST IMPORTANTLY, carrying out testing and inspection to ensure that any wiring changes or additions comply with safety requirements set out in the 600-page wiring regulations B7671. Any DIY attempt to alter wiring, swap accessories or fix wiring systems WITHOUT this knowledge or the appropriate electrical test equipment to check for safety is likely to be dangerous and lead to hidden faults, electric shock risk and possible fires!

8) Aging Wiring

I get it, new wiring isn’t Instagram worthy in the way a new kitchen, bathroom or driveway makeover but it’s the fundamental underpinnings of your home, your safety and your peace of mind. Forget social media for the moment and bragging rights to the neighbours, if your electrical wiring is obviously bloody ancient to the untrained eye then have it checked by a professional and trustworthy electrician to make sure its safe. Let’s make sure that your brand-new kitchen doesn’t need to be trashed in a few years to rewire your home, eh?

9) Water Damage

Along with ignoring electrical wiring, plumbing also gets missed in many homes. We know, we know, a new rewire or heating system isn’t sexy and doesn’t get many oohs and aaahs from the following on TikTok but at least you won’t suffer major water damage from failing pipework. Serious plumbing leaks not only mess up the dead expensive decoration you just had done but it can also completely ruin your electrical wiring and fuse box. Sometimes water damage occurs outside the property when outdoor sockets or lighting start to let in water. Fear not, we have seen it all before and can usually sort out any issues quickly and easily.

10) Rodent Damage?

Have you been hearing scratching sounds, scrabbling under the floorboards or in the loft? One emergency we attended, the rodents had made their way into the tiny gaps between the plasterboard and brick wall and chewed cables everywhere!!!! Rodents can absolutely wreck your home and it’s vital to have them dealt with by professionals immediately.

11) Brittle Cable Insulation

Wrapped around the copper wiring we have in modern homes is an insulating layer. This layer is now coloured in blue, brown and green-yellow insulation. The insulation prevents short circuits, earth leakage and other electrical issues from damaging the wiring, appliances and from tripping your consumer unit or blowing fuse boxes. This insulation actually breaks down over time and begins allowing electrical current to leak away (YES REALLY) leading to nuisance tripping on newer fuse boxes or consumer units.

12) Burnt Stuff

Usually when wiring starts to fail a modern consumer unit is more likely to detect it than an old fuse wire box. Burnt stuff is far more common when there are a whole host of electrical issues, an old fuse box, old wiring, poor installation, broken circuits etc. We have seen our fair share of burnt stuff and to be honest, it never surprises us despite being an absolute shock horror for many homeowners. We just fix things and move on. 😊

I can assure you that we will be able to assist you far beyond the capabilities of an influencer, content creator or other half-baked assistance from someone that cares more about followers than customers.
