2) Emergency Callout in Childwall
One of the most important things to remember when there is an Electrical Problem is not to panic. The photo is a picture of a Consumer Unit / Fuse Box. If you have a trip switch problem in your Childwall home then there is an electrical fault somewhere that needs some attention.
We received a callout to Childwall to deal with a trip switch that would not turn back on again after it had tripped.
Back to top3) Why does a trip switch go off?
The consumer unit (or fuse box if you like) is there to protect your electrical installation from harm. If it senses an electrical fault or serious electrical problems then it is likely to trip off the affected circuit or circuits until the problem is fixed.
DO NOT continually reset a trip switch as this is likely to cause damage to your wiring, electrical system and the trip switches in your consumer unit.
Back to top4) What are the first steps to take?
A trip switch problem is the most common issue we get phone calls for. The best thing to do is have a look at our helpful FREE article just HERE. We don’t need your email address, we don’t want a subscription and it will cost you nothing to run through this article and may save you SOME MONEY.
The steps are as follows:
- STOP trying to turn the affected switch back on
- Unplug all your electrical equipment from your plug sockets (don’t just turn the sockets off)
- Double check the kitchen area as there are lots of appliances plugged in
- Try turning the switch back on
It’s best to look at the article for more in depth help though. 😊

Back to top6) How much does it cost to come out?
Look at our dedicated emergency page for up-to-date costs, we cannot include costs on every single blog, article and web page we write as this would take an enormous amount of time to update. 😊
Typical costs for resolving electrical emergencies are as follows:
(All prices are a guide only)
Trip Switch Problems - £90 - £250. Trip switch issues can vary in cost due to the unknown nature of the electrical issue before investigation takes place. A faulty trip switch can be replaced for around £120 if required.
Time Taken – 30mins – 120mins
Burning Smell from Fusebox – £100 - £1000. Prices vary depending upon the level of damage that has occurred inside the fuse box. One damaged trip switch will be much cheaper to replace than the whole fuse box. If the Fusebox requires replacement and cables have been burnt then the job is likely to cost more.
Time Taken – 30mins – 1.5 days
Total Power Cut – £120+. Often a power cut is not a problem with your electrical system and could be an issue with the power supply in the street. If the power cut is a result of a failed Main Switch in your electrical system, then this can be replaced. The mains cables may also have to be repaired or replaced if there are damaged.
Time Taken – 1 hour – 3 hours
Intermittent Power Cut - £120 - £350. The reason for the intermittent power cuts often dictates the costs. Sometimes an RCD device in the fuse box / consumer unit can be at fault. There can also be loose connections on the busbar (power supply to circuits bar) causing problems. The more damage that has occurred, the greater the cost is likely to be.
Time Taken – 1 hour – 3 hours
No Sockets Working – £90 - £450. When there are no sockets working, there could be cable damage under the floor causing trip switch problems at the Fusebox. There could be a faulty socket causing the issue or there may be some problems with overload on the circuit switch. The more fault finding, fault tracing and investigation required, the higher the overall costs are likely to be.
Typically, most accessible faults are found more quickly and cost less to fix.
Time Taken – 1.5 hours – 5 hours
No lights Working - £90 - £380. When your lights fail in your home it can be a real concern. Fear not, we are experts at tracing issues and diagnosing the causes of lighting failure. If there is an issue with one light then costs will be lower than if part of the circuit needs rewiring.
Time Taken – 1 hour – 4 hours
RCD / RCB / RCCB / ELCB problems - £90 - £900. When one of these switches’ trips, the most common cause is a faulty appliance. That is the case in 9 out of 10 emergency callouts in Liverpool. Where the issue is a faulty RCD / RCB / RCCB then the device will be replaced. If the ELCB has failed then it is often a new fuse box that will be required in order to safely repair the issues. Sometimes there is a fault with the wiring on one of the electrical circuits which typically costs less to fix than replacing the fuse box.
Time Taken – 1 hour – 5 hours
Sparking Plug Sockets – £90 - £270. Out of hours emergency callouts cost more than pre-arranged or normal working hour appointments. Not to worry though, a sparking plug socket is often JUST the actual socket that is faulty. Sometimes there may be a little wiring damage behind that needs repairing. Worst case scenario, some new cable needs to be installed from the socket before or under the floorboards in the case of extensive damage.
Time Taken – 1 hour – 3 hours
