When the power to the whole house trips you will be wondering what in the heck has happened to cause such electrical failure.
Many electrical problems can cause complete electrical failure in your home and this Emergency Callout in Liverpool was no exception.
As your local Emergency Electrician in Liverpool, I see many failures, problems and urgent situations that could easily have been avoided for the sake of a little maintenance and TLC to the electrical system.
Back to top1) What Causes Power Failure?
In the case of this job, the shower pull cord switch had caught fire and caused a device in the Fusebox (that electrics box with all the switches in) to trip. When the device tripped, it killed all the power to every single thing in the house as a safety precaution.
This device is known as the RCD (Residual Current Device) and is responsible for preventing electrical shocks along with limiting the risk of fires starting in some cases. The RCD feeds power to one or more electrical circuits (sockets, lights, cooker etc) and if there is an electrical fault on any one of those circuits that is likely to cause electrical shocks then the RCD will turn the power off REALLY QUICKLY.
Back to top2) Why did the Shower Pull Cord Switch Burn Out?
A common sight for us is the pull cord switch for showers becoming melted, burnt and damaged. The truth is that this happens over time and is a result of many factors such as:
- Possible poor installation
- Wearing of internal switch contacts
- Loosening of cables in terminals
- Cables undersized for power of shower
- Shower Switch undersized for power of shower
- Overheating
- General Wear and Tear
One of the best ways of preventing a shower switch pull cord burn out from occurring is to never actually turn the pull cord switch off. Yes, I know we are all worried about our electricity bills but the truth is that the little light that you see on the shower pull cord switch actually uses very little electricity at all!!
Maybe some of you are worried that if you don’t turn the shower off at the pull cord switch then the whole house will catch fire in the night whilst you sleep? Sounds a bit silly maybe but I have had several clients who worry unnecessarily about leaving the shower switch on as they think it is going to catch fire.
Back to top3) Wearing the Switch Out
Please NEVER turn the pull cord switch on or off as a means of turning the shower on and off!!! The pull cord switch is NOT designed to turn a heavy electrical load on and off. It is merely an isolation device for disconnecting the electrical supply to the shower. Such situations could be maintenance, replacement or testing of the shower unit.
Using the shower pull cord switch to turn the shower on and off will lead to premature failure and possibly even burnt wiring and switch destruction as we see in the photograph at the top of the page.
